What My Kids Are Reading This Week: Moon Landing!

With the recent anniversary of the moon landing, both my kids have become super interested in space and especially the moon. Here are the books we’ve been reading these past few weeks:

Moon: Earth’s Best Friend

by Stacey McAnulty with pictures by Stevie Lewis

Children's Books - Moon Earth’s Best Friend by Stacey McAnulty

So far there are three books in this series about the Earth, the Sun and this one, the Moon.

It’s told from the point of view of the moon who is Earth’s best friend.  She explains to us how she was created, what a satellite is and all her phases.  I actually learned things I didn’t know (like the word waning gibbous) and the kids really love all the moon facts.

Children's Books - Field Trip to the Moon by John Hare

This is a wordless book with beautiful illustrations.

A class goes to the moon and one straggler student astronaut gets separated from the rest of the class.  When her class gets back on the school bus space shuttle, she meets a group of moon aliens.  She shows them how to draw using her crayons.

When she is finally picked up, she leaves the aliens with a new skill and their very own colourful crayons.  My kids LOVE this book!

Children's Books - Moon A Peek-Through Picture Book by Britta Teckentrup

Britta Teckentrup is such a lovely illustrator and we love these nature books of hers.  With each page, a peek-through hole changes the phase of the moon.

The moon glows over deserts, the tundra, tropical beaches and forests.  It ends with a glowing full moon over a sleeping town. These books are so pretty – check out Tree, Ocean and Bee too.

Hope you enjoy these picks!  And that your kids enjoy travelling to the moon from home!

Happy Reading,
