Here are my three fun discoveries of the week:
This one clicked for me right away because my son is similar to the little pig Fergus. Like Fergus, George is shy, he prefers to watch from a distance before joining in, and he likes what he knows. One day Fergus and his little brother Dink are playing on the beach when an enthusiastic, outgoing little pig named Tallulah says ‘hello’ to them in three different languages. At first Fergus pretends to hide from this exuberant little pig.
While Dink and Tallulah hit if off right away, Fergus feels awkward and a bit left out. That is until a crab is stuck upside down and they need to work as a team to help him.
What did we learn?
Never to judge someone right away, working together is important, and that it’s okay to be shy at first.
Why I like it: It’s a funny and cute story about first impressions, making new friends and accepting people for who they are. If you have a shy little person in your house this is a great one for them!
Otto is a bear that lives in a story but has a secret: he can come to life. Otto loves nothing more than when kids read his book but one day his family moves away and forgets him.
Think Toy Story but for books.
Otto sets off on an adventure but the city is no place for a book bear. Eventually he discovers a library where there are all sorts of book bears and other characters that come to life. He finds a new home and is happily read everyday.
What did we learn?
Not to leave your books behind! Ha!
Why I like it:
The concept alone is fun – it gets George and I talking about the characters in our books. Plus it promotes a love for the library and reading. Simple, whimsical and a great story of acceptance & friendship.
George has a habit of screaming while Alice is sleeping: IS BABY ALICE SLEEPING???? I got this book in the hopes that if a character in a book is staying quiet while his brother naps, so will George.
A little mouse, his mum and his baby brother arrive home and his brother has fallen asleep in his stroller. He must stay quiet while the baby sleeps. This is a very difficult task especially when there is art to be made (he can’t paint his brother) and pots to bang.
What did we learn?
To shut the F up when your baby sister is sleeping !!! Or, in a nicer way, it’s hard to stay quiet.
Why I like it:
I swapped out ‘my brother’ for ‘my sister’ and was able to explain to George in pictures why we have to be quiet while Alice is sleeping. He seemed to get it. He no longer screams, but rather loud whispers “IS BABY ALICE SLEEPING?”. Progress right?
*he has reverted back to screaming at her and climbing on her. Time to read the book again.
Bonus: Ruth Ohi is Canadian and lives right here in Toronto!
Happy Reading,
