After Christmas I thought that there was a lull in my thematic reading to the kids and then I realized February was rife with exciting things to read about and they appear to all be happening within a very short span of time: Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year, and the 2018 Winter Olympics!!
At breakfast we have a fun mix of books about raining hearts, dragons and rabbits skiing down hills. It makes for a bit of confusion. George wants to make some Valentine’s cards for the lion dancers.
Here is what we are reading for Valentine’s Day:
I think this is one of my favourites for Valentine’s Day. It’s sweet and simple without being overly sappy.
One day it rains hearts and Cornelia Augusta catches them make the perfect Valentine’s for her friends: a dog, a mouse, a turtle and a rabbit.
What did we learn?
To consider how to make gifts special and different for each friend.
Why I like it:
It’s whimsical and thoughtful with very simple illustrations (you will recognize the style from the If You Give a Mouse series). I love that Cornelia Augusta really considers how to make each card special to suit her friends.
Cat always delivers on any given holiday. He’s a bit rude and mean – hence why we like him. In this one he does not like Valentine’s Day because it is mushy. He can’t even think of one friend to make a card for.
The dog next door is annoying Cat. The dog keeps barking and throwing things over the fence like a bone or a ball. Cat hates the dog. He writes a rude Valentine’s poem for him and then he starts to build a rocket in order to send the dog to outer space. With the next ball thrown over the fence is a note for Cat. Dog has been sending him gifts for Valentine’s Day! Of course Cat has a change of heart and a new friend.
What did we learn?
To be nice to people we don’t understand (long shot?).
Why I like it:
Cat is cheeky and rude and I love how he talks to the reader in signs. I also love wiener dogs.
Although not technically about Valentine’s Day, this delightful book is all about ways to feel and show love – all told in haiku! I initially picked this book up because the Engineer used to always write to me (and any wedding guest book) in haiku.
There are haikus for teddy bears, dogs and owners, lemonade, birds and for their snow angels who are the perfect Valentines.
What did we learn?
You can love many things, animals, people and places.
Why I like it
It really is adorable with a little boy and girl that look like George and Alice. Plus, did I mention I have a soft spot for haiku?
