OH MY GOSH IT’S MY MOST FAVOURITE TIME OF THE YEAR!
Well, my favourite time of every four years: The Winter Olympics!
I feel most people love the summer Olympics but not me. It’s all about the winter ones. I think partly because Canada does best in those and partly because I actually do many of the sports (urm, if by ‘many’ I mean skate, ski, snowboard, and cross-country ski) so totally understand them. As if. I just understand that they are freaking hard.
Anyways, the Olympic Opening Ceremonies air this Friday and I am very excited and hope to get George & Alice on board in my cheering section. I’ve picked some books to prep them:
I absolutely adore this book. Max is a little boy and Marla is an owl. They are best friends. They are also Olympians.
The duo have all it takes to be Olympians: preparation, perseverance, self-care and determination. They try and try again to be the most amazing tobogganists (is that a thing?) in the world.
What did we learn?
We learned not to give up and that determination is the key to following your dreams.
Why I like it:
It’s a boy and an owl. That is reason alone. I just love that these two attempt their toboggan run again and again to prove they are Olympians. It’s a perfect read right before PyeongChang!
I love me a good interactive book and this is a great one.
Bunny would like to ski but he needs some help. The reader must shake and tap and tilt the book to help bunny down the slopes right into his nice, cozy den with his mummy.
What did we learn?
That you need snow to ski.
Why I like it:
I just really love interactive books. And then bunny is such an enthusiastic skier. I’m trying to prep George to like skiing so this is helping (he has requested slow skis though).
In this adaptation of the fairytale, Little Red Riding Hood skates to her grandma’s house on the frozen river. One day she sees a ‘pairs skating competition’ announcement in which the prize is a new pair of skates – which she desperately needs. Little Red looks around and quickly realizes that there is no one suitable to be her partner. The Dish was already with the Spoon, Hansel was already spinning Gtrele, Old McDonald was too clumsy and the seven dwarves were more into hockey.
But guess who ends up being the best candidate for her partner? You guessed it! The Big Bad Wolf. The poor wolf gets a bad rap and surprises everyone at the competition by not only being a fantastic skater, but I nice non-eating-red-riding-hood sort of wolf.
What did we learn?
We learned the names of a whole bunch of fairytale and nursery rhyme characters. We also learned that you shouldn’t judge the bad guy. They might be misunderstood.
Why I like it:
It’s a fun take on an old fairytale that incorporates characters from other fairytales and nursery rhymes. It’s great preparation for my favourite Olympic sport: ice dancing (due to my obsession with Virtue and Moir).
