Ethel is a big, old, black and white cat who does the same thing everyday. She likes the survey the land, monitor the weather and make sure things are the same that they always are. Today is a bit different for Ethel. She rolls on the sidewalk as per usual but after her lazy roll she is blue! Other cats talk about her unusual colour. Ethel is embarrassed and so the next day stays inside. Looking out the window she sees the young, slim Fluffy also a new colour: pink!
Ethel is no longer embarrassed with Fluffy by her side and together they roll in every colour of the rainbow.
What did we learn?
We learned that it’s okay to be different and that when you see someone is sad you should try to be their friend. Oh and about colours.
Why I like it:
It’s a sweet book about a unique friendship between an old curmudgeon and a young whipper-snapper. What’s not to like?
Percy loves nothing more than a balloon. Unfortunately for Percy, he is a porcupine so his balloons don’t last very long.
He must come up with a solution to stop his quills from popping balloons and consults his sister and his mom but they don’t offer much help. It’s up to him and when he thinks hard enough – he comes up with the perfect solution!
What did we learn?
When you have a problem, if you think long and hard enough about it, the solution will come to you.
Why I like it:
Mostly because I like balloons. I also like that George says “oh that clever little pork-y-pine”.
I absolutely adore this one and so does George. He always asks about Tina the cow.
I loved Merino’s first book, The Crocodile Who Didn’t Like Water and was excited to see the character from that one appear in this one. I’m always excited when I see a crossover (like Orange is the New Black appearing in The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt!).
In this book, Tina the cow has so many dreams and always wants to learn. Her sisters think she is ridiculous and that all of her dreams are impossible. That is until they finally venture out beyond in the fields in search of Tina and discover that the world is full of possibilities.
What did we learn?
So many lovely lessons! The biggest one being that when you dare to dream – great things are possible. We also learned that you shouldn’t listen to what others say about you. Plus the book is full of great words like ‘impossible’ ‘ridiculous’ and ‘extraordinary’.
Why I like it
I like cows. I like dreaming the impossible. And I like the fact that when we walk uphill George will suddenly hold his hands to his head and yell “this is IMPOSSIBLE! This is RIDICULOUS!”.
