I realize school went back last week, but my son only started today.
And even though it has been a week for many of your kids, I am sure they are still struggling with some aspects of heading to school each day. Mostly the departure of their parents.
These books have been really helpful for me:
This is a classic ‘back to school’ book that was first published 25 years ago.
I hadn’t heard of it until this year so I’m including it just in case you are as ignorant to New York Time’s Bestselling classic children’s books as I am!
In this very sweet story, Chester the racoon is nervous to go to his first night at school (yes night!). He wants to stay with his mother and his books and his toys and his home. His mama tells him that sometimes we all have to do things we don’t want to and she has a secret weapon for carrying her love with him to school.
If you don’t know this story, I’m not going to spoil it because it is very sweet.
Why I like it:
It WORKS! Mrs. Racoon’s trick works like a charm. I did it with George this morning before school and it made him braver. Very good book for showing children they aren’t alone in their fears and giving them some ammunition to face school all by themselves.
The children’s literature world lost a great one when Anna Dewdney passed away. Her Llama Llama books always have a fantastic lesson and this one is no exception.
It’s Llama Llama’s first day of school and he’s nervous and afraid. He feels shy and alone – especially when his mama goes and he has to stay. At first he does not want to participate in all the fun school activities like reading or new toys. He doesn’t want to play on the train or have a snack – he just misses his mama so much that he begins to cry.
His teacher reminds him that when the day is done, his mama will be back for him. And all his fellow students encourage him to play with them.
He ends up having a great day and, of course, his mama comes back just like she promised.
Why I like it:
It’s good because it addresses all the fears my son has. It shows all the fun things that happen at preschool. And it shows that it’s okay to miss your parents.
I LOVE these books about a real-life squirrel. Nancy Rose is a guidance councillor who lives in Nova Scotia and turned this fun hobby of taking photos of a squirrel into a series of books! I have no idea how she does it or how she comes up with the ideas – but I love the result.
In this new book, Mr. Peanut and Rosie set up the school. They get the library ready, buy school supplies and Mr. Peanut practises driving the school bus.
Why I like it
I just love these incredible hand-created scenes and the squirrels who seem to be such happy subjects. A fun and quirky read!
