My son is horse obsessed. And has been for nearly three out of his almost four years – which in kids years is alot.
I was so excited to find this book at my local library and it’s definitely a gem find. Very simple text with gorgeous, almost impressionist style illustrations tells the story of what a little girl (or boy) would do if she had a horse. She would feed him, hug him, and tame him. Then they would be a fearless team who could do anything.
Why I like it:
This book is a wonderful work of art with a message of friendship and bravery. George loves it because it stars his favourite animal.
Continuing in the horse theme, this book was my first horse find three years ago.
Noni the pony is friendly and funny. She dances (which the cows next door love) and canters and bucks (and kicks up her heels with the hens and the ducks). Her best friends are Dave the Dog and Coco the Cat.
She’s a pretty great pony.
Why I like it:
There are two books about Noni and she’s always having so much with her friends. The text is fun and rhythmic while the illustrations are bright and simple.
Kate Beaton is a Canadian author and illustrator – with a killer sense of humour.
Princess Pinecone wants a horse for her birthday. A strong horse fit for a warrior princess. What does she get? A roly-poly, pony. His eyes look in different directions, he eats her stuff, and he toots.
After her disappointment and frustration, Princess Pinecone discovers that she has a true warrior horse after all.
Why I like it:
Princess Pinecone is a warrior, viking princess (who I believe is a girl of colour – rare in kids books) which is fantastic. And it’s a good lesson. We’ve all been given gifts that are disappointing but we learn to make the most of them (you get what you get and you don’t get upset!). My husband still talks about a shiny trumpet that he never got. And my mum can’t get over the scooter that was given to her brother and not her even though she had asked for one (and she’s in her seventies!). So yeah, we can all relate to Princess Pinecone
Hope you enjoy these picks! And as always,
Happy Reading,
